چکیده

The design of distributed infrastructures to support remote collaboration among groups of social scientists raises new computational and networking challenges that Grid developers are currently targeting. Beyond such technical goals, however, the e-Science programme as a whole is increasingly recognizing the critical need for a comprehensive understanding of ordinary dayto-day work in the sciences. We have investigated one particular area of collaborative social scientific work – the analysis of video data. This paper discusses current practices of social scientific work with digital video; describes the resulting requirements for distributed video analysis systems; and outlines our initial programme of infrastructure and interface development to address these requirements as part of the VidGrid project.

RICE: A Reliable and Efficient Remote Instrumentation Collaboration Environment

Remote access of scientific instruments over the Internet (i.e., remote instrumentation) demand high-resolution (2D and 3D) video image transfers with simultaneous real-time mouse and keyboard controls. Consequently, user quality of experience (QoE) is highly sensitive to network bottlenecks. Further, improper user control while reacting to impaired video caused due to network bottlenecks could...

The Same Old Remote Misunderstandings: Object-Focused Interaction in e-Social Science

The emergence of e-Science systems to support remote collaboration and problem solving raises new computational challenges. However, corresponding collaboration support challenges have a longer history. This paper discusses one such issue, object-focused interaction, where remote participants may lose the co-produced sense of shared artefacts through the ways in which body and object are transm...

Combining Audio and Video to Protect Helpers' Focus of Attention in Multiparty Remote Collaboration on Physical Tasks

The increasing interest in supporting multiparty remote collaboration has created both opportunities and challenges for the research community. The research reported here aims to develop tools to support multiparty remote collaborations and to study human behaviors using these tools. In this paper we first introduce an experimental multimedia (video and audio) system with which an expert can co...

Body as a Workspace: Design for Remote Physiotherapy

Many common injuries can be treated effectively with physiotherapy, but accessing this treatment is difficult for those in rural locations. We seek to design video-based systems to support remote physiotherapy, so patients can access and engage with therapy and a professional from their homes. We conducted design sessions with practicing physiotherapists to iteratively design and build technolo...

Can You See What I See? Developing Coherent Support for Distributed Collaborative Video Analysis with MiMeG

This paper describes the process of trialing our first version of the MiMeG system, an e-social science tool designed to support ‘distributed data sessions’ in which social scientists conduct real-time, collaborative video analysis across remote sites. MiMeG provides a shared workspace in which remote participants can playback video, communicate vocally through VoIP, and create and archive anno...
